  • We offer a range of services including individual counselling, Autism assessments, ADHD assessments, and learning assessments.

    These services are available for children, teenagers and adults.

  • Yes we do. Blue Waves Therapy and Assessments sees clients from the age of 6 years old through to older adults.

  • Yes we do. To be eligible for a Medicare rebate for counselling, you will need to see your GP and have them complete a Mental Health Care Plan. The rebate for a general psychologist is $96.65 per session.

    You may also be eligible for a Medicare rebate for some components of an Autism Assessment if a referral is made.

  • Most health insurers now offer a partial rebate for counselling. Contact your private health fund first to check if you are covered.

    There is typically no private health rebate for assessments.

  • Counselling sessions are confidential and access to your information is limited to psychologists and admin staff who manage the practice, in line with the APS Code of Ethics.

  • Counselling

    If you need to cancel or reschedule, we require at least 24 hours notice. This allows us to offer a session to a client who is waiting for an appointment.

    There is no fee if you cancel or reschedule an appointment with more than 24 hours notice. If less than 24 hours notice, you will be charged 50% of the session fee. For no-shows, the full session fee will be charged.

    Assessments

    A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required to book in the Initial Interview.

    For the assessment sessions, 50% of the total fee is required to be paid in order to book in the appointment(s). These sessions are typically longer and require at least 48 hours notice for cancellation. If less than 48 hours notice is given (including no-shows), a cancellation fee of $250 will be incurred.

    The remainder of the total fee is then to be paid to book in the feedback session and receive the results and recommendations.

    Please note : Cancellation fees are not eligible for rebates with Medicare or Private Insurance.

  • Blue Waves Therapy and Assessments is happy to offer appointments via telehealth for most services. However, some assessments will require face-to-face appointments.

    Please mention telehealth services when completing the Contact form or in your free 15-minute consultation.

FAQs about ADHD Assessments

  • The general fee for an ADHD assessment is $1800.

    The exact fee can differ if other assessments are required for an accurate diagnosis. This would be discussed in the Initial Interview.

    A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required to book in the Initial Interview. Following this, the Assessment Session(s) would be arranged and 50% of the total fee is to be paid prior to the first assessment. The remainder of the fee is then payable prior to the feedback session.

  • No, you do not need a referral for ADHD assessments.

    However, some portions of the ADHD assessment process, such as the initial interview, may be eligible for Medicare rebates if a referral is made. Please seek clarification on this before the appointment.

    If you do have a referral, please forward it to admin@bluewavesperth.com before your appointment.

  • To ensure all assessments are completed properly, our assessments are typically conducted face-to-face.

    We are happy to offer a combination of telehealth and face-to-face sessions during the assessment process. Please mention this when completing the contact form or in the initial interview.

  • You may or may not receive a formal diagnosis of ADHD following the assessments. If in the Initial Interview the psychologist believes that further ADHD assessment is not warranted, this will be discussed.

    If you meet criteria for ADHD, a formal diagnosis can be made.

  • No, psychologists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication. While we can provide a formal diagnosis of ADHD only psychiatrists or pediatricians can prescribe ADHD medication in Australia.

    If you are seeking diagnosis solely for medication, we recommend that you go directly to a Psychiatrist. Psychiatrists often conduct their own assessments when evaluating ADHD (even when given a psychologist’s report. Going directly to a psychiatrist may save you time and money as you won’t be paying for two assessments.

  • Yes, absolutely. However, be aware that you will be asked personal questions regarding your medical and mental health, social life, and alcohol/drug use. Please ensure that you will be able to provide in-depth answers to personal questions in front of this person.

    Alternatively, if you would like to organise a second feedback session with a partner or significant other, this can be discussed in your feedback session.

FAQs about Autism Assessments

  • The fee for an autism assessment differs depending on the requirements of the evaluation.

    Typically, an adult autism assessment is $1700, while a child and adolescent autism assessment is $1980.

    A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required to book in the Initial Interview. Following this, the Assessment Session(s) would be arranged and 50% of the total fee required to be paid prior to the first session. The remainder of the total fee is then payable prior to the feedback session in order to receive the assessment results and recommendations.

  • Medicare rebates may apply for Autism assessments with an appropriate referral from a medical practitoner.

    These rebates are available for clients under 25 years of age. For more information about medicare rebates, follow this link or speak with your referring practitioner.

  • You do not need a referral from a GP or Paediatrician as we can provide assessment and consultation without a referral.

    However, if you intend to claim a Medicare rebate for part of the assessment fee, a referral from your GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist is required.

  • We are happy to offer telehealth sessions for adult assessments if required. Please mention this when completing the contact form below.

  • Yes absolutely! Alternative or co-occurring diagnoses like ADHD would be considered throughout.

    If you would like a comprehensive assessment of both ADHD and Autism from the start of the process, please mention this when contacting us.

    The cost of a combined Autism and ADHD assessment is $2800, as there would be more time required for assessment, reporting, and feedback.

  • A cognitive (IQ) assessment is not required in the assessment and diagnosis of Autism.

    However, if there are concerns about learning or you would like a better understanding of the cognitive/learning profile, a cognitive assessment can be included in the assessment sessions. Given the extra time required for this, the total fee for an Autism and Cognitive assessment is $2800.

  • The general fee for an assessment of Specific Learning Disorders is $1980, which consists of the intake interview, assessments, and the feedback session where the report and recommendations are discussed.

    A non-refundable deposit of $200 is required to book in the Initial Interview. Following this, the Assessment Session(s) would be arranged and 50% of the total fee is to be paid prior to the first assessment. The remainder of the fee is then payable prior to the feedback session.

  • No, you do not need a referral for learning assessments or an SLD diagnosis. Simply fill out the form below or follow this link to contact us and book your first appointment.

  • The main assessments used will only be completed face-to-face. If required, we are happy to complete the intake interview and the feedback session via telehealth.

  • If the criteria is met for a specific learning disorder, a formal diagnosis would be provided.

    Regardless of receiving a diagnosis or not, comprehensive recommendations will be provided for interventions and supports as needed.

  • You will not need to provide anything for the Initial Interview.

    After your first appointment, you may be asked to bring copies of documents such as school reports, previous assessments, and anything deemed necessary for an accurate assessment.

  • To make sure that you can speak openly about any concerns, your child would not be present at the Intake Interview or the Feedback Session.

    If requested, our psychologist can have a follow-up feedback session with your child. However, it is important to consider the implications of this.

  • The assessments must be one on one with the client, a support person is not able to be present for this.

    We will do all we can to build rapport and familiarity with the environment prior to the assessment session in order to reduce any anxiety.
